2007 Season News

In the 25-lap Late Model feature, Gerry DeGasparre, Jr. of Pawtucket, RI put an exclamation point on his third championship drive by securing his fourth checkered flag of the season in the Spumoni’s Restaurant-A-1 Custom Auto Body #71 Chevrolet. Bob Hussey led the first two circuits before Mike Becker motored past into the lead. DeGasparre passed Hussey on lap 4, one circuit before a multi-car incident saw three-time winner Kevin Casper go up and over the nose of John Dumas’ machine. DeGasparre outgunned Becker on the restart and drove away from all challengers while Robin Berghman worked her way into third.

At the crossed flag signal, Matt Breault ran fourth, ahead of Jeramee Lillie, Jonathan Dickerman, Kyle Casper, Mark Hudson, Randy Clark, and Mike Taschereau. Kevin Casper slowly reentered the mix, taking 10th on lap 14 and ninth two circuits later. Meanwhile, Breault and Lillie put on a torrid battle for fourth, while Kyle Casper overtook Dickerman for sixth. Contact between Lillie and Breault on lap 20 brought out the final caution of the race, and earned both drivers a trip to the back of the pack.

Kyle Casper and Berghman put on a show for third in the waning laps, but out front it was all DeGasparre, who cruised to his 24th career Seekonk win. In Victory Lane, the driver dedicated the victory to crew member Eric Carrier, whose tour of military duty will take him to Kuwait later this week.

In the 25-lap Late Model feature, Pawtucket, RI’s Gerry DeGasparre, Jr. walked away with top honors for the third time this season, passing Mike Becker at the halfway signal and finishing 1.97 seconds ahead of him to extend his lead atop the point standings. A wild crash on the second lap saw Jonathan Dickerman go up and over the hood of Randy Clark’s Chevrolet, collecting two-time winner Kevin Casper and front-runner Bryan Connors in the process. Becker led the early circuits while Jeramee Lillie rapidly advanced from eighth to second. In their wake, DeGasparre slid into third on lap five just as Kevin Folan came from the top of the race track to the bottom to claim fourth.

As the laps ticked by, Lillie’s car appeared to tighten up and as his ride backpedaled, DeGasparre moved forward. The two-time champion used the inside groove to pass for the lead on lap 12 and drove away unchallenged to the checkers. Becker was second, with previous event winner Matt Breault, Folan, and Lillie rounding out the top five. The sixth through tenth positions went to Robin Berghman, Kyle Casper, Barry Shaw, and Jon Dickerman and Kevin Casper, who rebounded from their early race incident to finish ninth and tenth.

Jeramee Lillie battles with defending champion Gerry DeGasparre, Jr. to post his first win in nearly two years. DeGasparre climbed from 11th to fourth in the initial 8 laps, as Folan, Mike Becker, and Lillie mixed it up at the head of the class. Two quick cautions for minor spins bunched up the field at the midway portion of the race. The second yellow, which came just as DeGasparre had passed Lillie for the lead, negated the maneuver, as the field reverted back to the last completed green flag lap. Over the final 12 laps of the event, Lillie and DeGasparre put on the show of the night, trading paint and the lead all the way to the checkers.

In the end, Jeramee’s Houle Motorsports-Friendy Guys Pizza-Holmes Jewelers #3 Ford crossed the stripe 0.189 seconds ahead of DeGasparre’s A-1 Custom Auto Body-sponsored Chevrolet.

Preparing for the 2007 season.

Well, it already started with the annual Daytona Fundraiser, what and amazing turnout, 230 people, the best turn out in our 13 years of having the party. Thanks to everyone who helped and of course everyone who came out to support the team.

After a long winter of hard work, Team 71 attended the 2007 Speedway Expo car show. As the Seekonk Speedway late model champion, we were asked to represent the track. By the end of the weekend, the team captured there 1st win of season, being voted the best appearing Late Model / Pro Stock.

Now with season drawing close, the crew is working just as hard to get ready for the season opener.

A lot of other news as, it looks like we will be running a bunch of shows at Thompson Speedway this year, in the 2nd R. Gentes Trucking late model. And that will also lead into two cars at Seekonk Speedway for this team. Gerry is registered as the # 0 at Thompson, and Rick will be the # 78 at Seekonk.

There are some changes with the team this year, 1st of all, Custom Auto Body is now A-1 Custom Auto Body, Pepsi Cola is now back after a year off, and Neolite Signs will be joining the list of people supporting the team.

Let's not forget the people who have helped in the past, because without there help, the 2006 championship would not have been possible, such as  Triple G Scaffolding, The Grigas Family, Shamrock Properties, Coke Cola, And Rayline Racing Bodies. These People helped us to perform at the highest level week in and out, and I would like to thank them again.

As for the current sponsors, we hope to have the same success as we have had in the past, with hopefully the same final results. I look forward to the up coming season, and would once again like to thanks everyone who helps me and this race team.

Thanks for stopping by,
Gerry Jr.
